A brief information session on Dom Bellot, the French monk and architect, who collaborated on the design of the interior and the dome. The tour will emphasize the influence of Art Deco style on the Oratory design.

Tours, one in French, the other English, will be guided by Jean-Yves Bourdages and Jack Gaiptman.

Advanced reservation and payment is required by May 30, 2008. Space is limited, so book early.

Meet at 8:30 to 8:45 a.m. In front of the McGill University Bookstore, 3420 McTavish, north of Sherbrooke Street
Departure at 9 a.m. for the Eastern Townships.

Our first stop takes us to Granby to view Mont Sacré-Coeur, a 1930 Seminary by Ludger Venne with a marvelous Art Déco chapel, and Paroisse St-Benoit, an example of Bellotism, after the work of Dom Paul Bellot.

We will then go to Magog for lunch, at your own expense.

In the afternoon we will visit two Art Deco churches and the Abbey Saint-Benoit-du-Lac, designed 1939-1941 by French Benedictine architect, Dom Paul Bellot (1876-1944). It Is also where Bellot is buried. The monastery possesses all the hallmarks of Bellot’s style-subtle geometric relationships, intricate stone and brick-work, and multi-coloured tiles.

We will return via Ste. Agnès Vineyard located in the Sutton Mountains of southern Quebec for a tour and dinner. The Ste. Agnès vineyard was established in 1997 by Henrietta Antony who will welcome us to her magnificent vinery.

Trip will take place rain or shine.
Walking shoes recommended.

The 20th Century Society of the Carolina Mountains invites you to join them for another art, architecture, and design tour as we explore one of America’s greatest cities: CHICAGO! Our award winning trip to Cleveland in 2006 received rave reviews and we are planning an equally exciting tour of Chicago.

Registration is limited to 50 so sign up early. A registration form is available on the TCSCM site.

TCSCM tours are characterized by their manageable size and access to venues not typically open to the public. The ambitious itinerary will include the Prairie School, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Mid-Century.
